Rodeo Bloopers 2 (1990)
Directed by Jerry "The Boing" Nezz
Rodeo Video VHS
THE FILM
Q: When is a man being gored by a bull a blooper?
A: When the drum machine is pounding and the whole thing is in Slow-Mo.
For all of us who thought that Rodeo Bloopers 1 was a little "light", Rodeo Bloopers 2 kicks it into high gear. 30 action-packed minutes of rodeo excitement packaged as "bloopers". And, I loved every minute of it. (No. I "love" every minute of it. The moment I'm done writing this I'm putting the tape back on.) The whole thing is hosted by Sacha Baron Cohen's little-known character Old Timer Dan Butts. (The mustache is a delight.) There is, sadly, little insight into the lives of The Rodeo Clown, which I had been promised in #1. But, there are enough of those roughshod rapscallions to keep me laughing my phat ass off!
In previous reviews, I've given you my opinion of the "Blooper", or "fowl up", in our society. And, I think, this video really nails what I was talking about. 29 minutes and 37 seconds is the perfect length. It feels like it's about an hour long but a clock will show you that it isn't. Men falling. Men being trampled. Men being thrown. Kids falling off of sheep. The occasional woman falling over. Guys racing wild horses. Clowns clowning. If this doesn't have everything you could ever want, than you're insatiable and I can't help you. (Maybe this tape and Stunt Rock would be "everything" that you need.)
Q: What do you get when you put 10 rodeo clowns and a very angry bull in the ring?
A: 10 dead rodeo clowns.
The only weak moment: About halfway in, Shawn Frey & Bobby D. engage in a brief interview. Like all rodeo interviews, it's spoken in a vernacular that I would call "archaic". They speak, they talk, but I can't understand a thing they're saying. Luckily, we return immediately to the beauty of men getting stepped on by horses and, sometimes, bulls.
If these are the bloopers, I'm dying to see the sport itself. This video (and its predecessor) implies that everyone who falls off of an animal during the rodeo is involved in a blooper. Is that true? I had originally imagined that this tape consisted of things like…"Uh-Oh! Happy forgot to put on his clown wig!" Or "Oh No! Biff Tanman got put on a tame horse instead of a wild one! Who put that in there?" BOING!!!!!!! But, the 30 minutes consist of rodeo footage, beautiful rodeo footage. All of it, by virtue of the name on the video box, is a blooper. Perfect! Now, I want to go out & catch a Touring Rodeo Blooper Company as they come through my town.
One lady does trip as she's heading back to the sidelines. I believe that that is an actual textbook Dick Clark-approved blooper.
AUDIO AND VIDEO
It's shot by random folks at the rodeo. It ain't hi-def. It's bloop-def. The music is a constant pounding upbeat synth/ drum machine mix, occasionally reminding me of The Pointer Sisters.
EXTRAS
There is a Rodeo Bloopers 3.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Q: What sport is actually a blooper?
A: Rodeo, apparently.
